To market, to market (again)

What, again? Yup.  But I've been to three out of the three cities I've visited, and the Mercado Municipal is about a mile from my hotel.

There were lots of interesting buildings along the way:

The market itself is hard to miss -- it covers an entire block and there are no shops on the outside.

On the inside, fabulous.  Stands overflowing with anything you could wish, including pig offal.  Unfortunately my $%!# camera balked at taking any pictures inside.

The area around the market has lots of stands on the sidewalks and was heaving with people.  It was lunchtime so I stopped by the deep-fried pockets stand.

Yum!  Crispy and just out of the hot oil, big (about 4" x 8" ), mine filled with meat (beef) and cheese, with fresh-pressed sugar cane with lime, for $4!

(Update: I later found out that this is a very popular street food known as "pastel," and can be filled with anything from ground beef to Nutella! )

And dinner was a very good bife à milanesa with more rice, salad and beans than one person could possibly consume, although I polished off the cutlet and fries, for US$7!
