Chilean Food x 3
It doesn't seem like it's going to be as interesting as Peruvian cuisine, but I'm going to try as much as I can!
#1: Of course, it wouldn't be a Latin American country without empanadas! Baked rather than deep-fried, like every country I've visited except Colombia, these were excellent, probably the best I've had. One was basically ground beef (good) and the other mushroom and cheese, even better. I think one reason they're so good (and expensive, from $2.75 to $4.00) is that they're really generous with the fillings.
#2: This is pastel de choclo, choclo being corn. It's basically a corn pudding, sweeter than I expected, and hidden inside are chicken, half a boiled egg, and a couple of olives (always with pits!). This was pretty good, and as to be expected very filling, but I won't order it again. ($4.50)
#3: Did you know that Chile's national dish is a hot dog? Rather, a "completo," and it's the (extremely generous) toppings that make the dog.
I didn't order the "ass," a common misspelling of "as" meaning ace. It's the same thing as a completo but with sliced beef.
I got the Italiano, so-named because its toppings (chopped tomato, guacamole, and mayo) are the colors of the Italian flag.
Chileans love their mayo! You never have to order extra.
But, you ask, how was it? Pretty darn good. The guac was delicious. But in the end, sometimes a hot dog is just a hot dog . . . ($2.25)
